Excerpt

He wasn’t certain how much time passed. He drifted into a fitful slumber, and upon waking, a small light in the corner of the room illuminated a jug of water and a bowl. The latter contained a porridge-like substance—tasteless but not unpleasant. He didn’t hesitate to eat and drink this time. The water had been safe, and Kaname’s speech about not saving him just to poison him had rung true. So, he wolfed the meal down. The moment he finished eating and set the bowl aside, the light turned off.

He must have fallen asleep again, because the next time he came to, he sensed a presence in the room. He turned toward it and heard a soft chuckle.

“Hello again, Captain Starr. How are you feeling?”

“Okay,” Evander muttered. His aches and pains were gone and he felt more rested than he had in a long time. But he wasn’t about to share that with Kaname. “Don’t you wanna turn the light on?”

“Why bother when I can see you perfectly well already?”

“It’s true then? About your eyes?”

Evander had heard the tales ever since he was a boy. The Teludazi were the monsters parents used to discipline wayward children. They were the creatures talked about at night around the campfire. It was said all their eyes were that odd lilac color because they could see equally well in light and dark. It was pointless hiding from them beneath your bed or in the closet—they would still see you.

When he made captain and joined the fleet, Evander’s superiors had striven to suppress such rumors. It was bad for morale, Evander supposed, if you believed your enemy had superhuman abilities. In all other respects, the Teludazi were like them—humanoid, with a similar life span—and that was what the generals expounded. But on the ships, out in deep space, the crew talked. And it seemed the stories had been true all along.

Exclusive Excerpt

While Sic took his shower, I flopped back on the bed, not bothering to put anything on. I didn’t know what that meant. Sic had avoided the topic of our little lips-to-lips after I apologized. Being a straightforward guy, I wouldn’t have expected him to let go of a topic like that. It was just… confusing. Maybe he needed time to think about how to react. I heard when Sic finished his shower. I looked to the door of my bedroom and braced myself for whatever reaction I might get from him.

A few minutes later he came back to the bedroom, a towel wrapped around his waist. When he saw me, he stopped dead in his tracks. He leaned on the door frame and casually regarded me. Since I desperately wanted to know what was on his mind, I decided to mood-color him. When I squinted, I was, to be honest, surprised.

“You’re orange.” I stated the obvious.

“Tangerine, to be exact, and so are you.” He grinned and walked toward me, loosening his towel along the way.

Excerpt

The quiver in William’s indrawn breath touched his heart, as did the tears and small hiccup. He couldn’t recall ever seeing his friend so distraught before. He placed a kiss on William’s flushed cheek. “Is it really so bad?”

William nodded and hid his face against Fredrick’s shoulder. “Of course I forgive you. I did something much worse. I didn’t go to the docks to meet you at all. I’m such a bad person… I’m sure you hate me….” He broke off in a sob.

Fredrick smoothed his dark curls, studied his pretty profile in the flickering candlelight. Love swelled in his chest, making it difficult to speak. “I could never hate you,” he murmured. “Now, why didn’t you want to meet with me?” He played with the buttons on William’s pants. “I certainly want to be with you.”

“Freddie, I want to be with you, too!” William lowered his voice when Fredrick put a finger against his lips. “But you don’t know me.” His voice dropped further, and Fredrick bent his head to hear him. “I’ve been with men. I can’t count them all. And you deserve so much better than that, better than me. I’m ashamed.”

“Sweetest William, don’t cry,” Fredrick begged, feeling the tears on his chest. He put a finger under William’s trembling chin and tilted his face to meet his gaze. “You’re so beautiful, love. Why shouldn’t you have all the men you desire?”

“Truly? Because I don’t want them anymore. I only want you.”

Pleasure flushed through Fredrick, though he cautioned himself that he might be a fleeting passion with his mercurial lover. “Good,” he said, and rolled William under him. “Because you’re the only man I’ve ever wanted.”

Excerpt

FROM THE SNIPPETS I’d heard from the different families I’d stayed with over the years—not that they’d ever cared to share much—a couple of generations ago, due to a steel shortage, most industries started to wane. It was said that it came down to such a degree that all the seeming essentials in life were erased. I was skeptical of that, because as far as I’d noticed, electricity, water, even televisions and cars were still in existence. However, one thing I’d heard from the grandparents of the families was that skies used to be blue instead of cardinal red, trees green and brown instead of khaki or teal, and seas usually blue as well, instead of fandango. The granny who’d told me this said that everything had changed color after the industrialization breakdown; she’d experienced it herself. I believed her, because she was the only one who took the time to speak to me in my youth. Truth be told, though, however dramatic the color change was for her, since I’d lived with the new colors all my years, it didn’t affect me at all. As for other aspects of life, even she said that seventy years after the breakdown, they now were similar to before.

I did, however, know something that might be related to the breakdown. I’d always been afraid to squint when I was young, because whenever I did, all the people I saw changed into different colors. Some were brown, some red, and occasionally some pink. It seemed a bit funny. I didn’t know what that meant. In order not to get confused, I stopped altogether. I’d thought I was just weird that way, until I heard the story about the breakdown. Now I loved to squint. Though I’d yet to learn what colors meant, I did discover how the color change could be useful.

I worked in a pub, Tingo; not that the pub knew about my business. I was a “part time drug dealer”, with part time meaning I helped drug dealers determine who in the pub was in need and from whom the dealers needed to stay away. I never did drugs myself, but I helped out when I was in need of cash. The job was easy. I’d squint my eyes and those in orange would be the ones to approach, instead of those rare yellow ones. It worked every time. From what I’ve heard, many of those yellow ones were undercover cops. The dealers often got caught when I didn’t help.

Away from the occasional “helping-out” in the pub, my real interest there was actually the cute guys. I got great satisfaction from looking at all the hot men, talking to them, and consequently taking them to bed. It wasn’t always easy, as one would know, but it was so much simpler with my “special ability”. My prey would also be orange when I squinted, but a less reddish shade, more like tangerine. When I spotted one I liked, I’d squint my eyes and whisper to myself, and almost to him, “You want to come home with me.” In no more than ten minutes, the man I wanted would magically come to buy me a drink, and we’d later end up at his place or mine, doing what I loved. That, again, worked every time.

SIC HELD MY head in his lap. I looked up and saw, against the backdrop of the cardinal red sky, his angular face looking down at me. We were secluded by teal-colored woods around us. It was chaotic, for the forest was on fire, its color black and blue blending with red and teal. Despite the turmoil and the utter pain in my chest, I felt peaceful, as if all sounds had been erased except my shallow breathing.

“Don’t fall asleep, Sen,” he said to me, both commanding and begging. “Don’t.”

I lifted a corner of my mouth. I was too tired to talk.

Amidst all the distractions, I saw Sic squint his right eye. A subtle one; one he probably thought I wouldn’t notice.

I also squinted. Sic turned lime green when I did that, all over. I smiled because it was lime instead of tangerine or blue. I was sure I appeared the same to him.

It was a good day, regardless of the pain in my chest.

Excerpts

from Through The Front Door by EDDY LEFEY

I think about how my family, friends, and employer will react to this news. This is definitely disturbing. I know I’ll have to deal with the fallout soon. It scares me, but it’s Gary’s hateful tone regarding Thomas that is really upsetting. I just don’t understand it.

How can someone such as Gary, who’s been subject to harassment and discrimination himself, condemn or discriminate against someone else? I have always been a proponent of the idea that if one wishes love and understanding about one’s differences, one has to love and understand others’ differences.

Reactions like Gary’s baffles me. I’ve known there was discrimination within the gay community based on race, economic status, or against other communities within the LGBT context, but I thought a rational, educated, intelligent person like Gary wouldn’t stoop to that. That kind of thinking has always made no sense to me.

I glance up. Thomas’ eyes are still locked on me. I feel my cheeks redden. My cheeks reddened even more. I’m so embarrassed. I check device again. I fiddle with the settings of the app and change the passcode. I look up again to Thomas, whose expression hasn’t changed. “I’m sorry you were put in the middle of this.”

from A Hopeless Mirage by KEVIN CAUCHER (my story! exclusive excerpt on my blog)

I arrived a couple of minutes early. Since I had the extra time, I decided to get my phone out and see if anyone was nearby. The phone buzzed when the Grumblr application loaded. I was almost excited, since that indicated I’d got a message, which was quite rare. y mood was quickly dampened when I read Sorry, no rice.

“Why did you even bother?” I muttered, not sure if the question was to this guy or myself. Usually people just blocked me after I sent them the face picture. Since he didn’t, I blocked him instead. “Guy, you should accept the fact no one would want anything to do with you. Not on apps, at least.”

I rested my head on the steering wheel. It wasn’t to calm myself down—I’d encountered too many situations like this to be angry—but rather to recover from the casual racism in the words.

I shrugged and raised my head. I was meeting Lachlan’s boyfriend—or so I assumed—and I wanted to be cheery and present a good first impression, seeing as Johan was going to move in with us. I gave the phone one last glance, thinking I should delete the app. I looked at the passenger seat and picked up the box of chocolates, since I’d been told Johan loved them.

Books Coming!

My author page is up in Wayward Ink Publishing (WIP)’s website!

I’m quite ecstatic to announce that toward the end of last year, I signed two contracts with WIP, one short story in anthology Mix and Match, and one standalone novelette/novella.

I must admit I felt like I had advantage for the anthology, being Chinese living in Australia, and my partner being Caucasian.
I am very proud of my story though. The anthology will be coming out soon.

Recent activities in the writing world.

I’m feeling a bit guilty for not doing my free writing in the last couple of weeks. I’m afraid the cliched busy life and work and all is no longer acceptable.

I have, however, been drafting, revising and editing two of my stories for anthologies for Wayward Ink Publishing, and they are going well, I suppose.

It is a bit more difficult when one doesn’t have a beta reader, but I feel like it’d be still okay to edit by myself if I give it enough time to go through multiple drafts and enough time so that I can have a fresh pair of eyes every edit.

Also, having some friends that are interested in reading the drafts helps too.

Writer’s Edit has a great guide on steps to revise one’s story.

One last note: don’t think I’m claiming to be an expert on revising. In fact I think I’m awful with revising, but a lot of trial-and-errors helps.
